Alex Luik, a lawyer and a tech expert shared his insights on the future of law

Updated: Dec 15, 2023

We are always on the lookout for inspiring speakers who can offer valuable insights and perspectives to our community. That’s why we were delighted to have Alex Luik, a Junior Associate at Hedman and a Technical Lead at the GDPR Register, as a guest speaker at our event on November 27th at Audentes International.

Alex is a former student of the University of Tartu, where he graduated with a degree in law. He has a keen interest in technology and innovation, and he combines his legal expertise with his technical skills to help clients navigate the complex and evolving digital landscape.

Alex gave an informative and engaging talk on Intellectual Property Law and Data Protection Law, two topics that are very relevant in today’s digital world. He explained the basics of intellectual property law, which covers the protection of creative works such as books, music, art, and software. He also discussed the challenges and opportunities of data protection law, which regulates the collection, processing, and sharing of personal data.

Alex used examples of famous cases such as Rogers vs Koons, where a photographer sued an artist for copying his work, to illustrate the necessity and complexity of the legal field. He also explored how new laws would be needed to address emerging issues such as Generative AI in art, where algorithms can create original artworks that may challenge the notion of authorship and ownership.

Alex also shared his personal journey and experience as a lawyer and a tech expert. He spoke about the pros and cons of choosing a career in law, such as the intellectual challenge, the social impact, and the competitive environment. He also described the requirements for a successful career in law, such as the education, the skills, and the mindset. He also explained the different specialisations and legal fields and careers, such as private law, public law, criminal law, and the various legal professions. He also gave us a glimpse into his career at a law firm, where he works on diverse and exciting projects with clients from different sectors and industries.

Finally, Alex gave us his vision of the future of law in terms of AI, flexibility, globalisation, automation, and displacement. He discussed how technology is transforming the legal profession and the legal system, and how lawyers need to adapt and innovate to stay relevant and effective. He also highlighted the opportunities and challenges that technology brings to the legal field, and how lawyers can leverage technology to enhance their work and their impact.

We would like to thank Alex for his time and enthusiasm, and for inspiring us to learn more about the fascinating world of law. We hope to see him again soon and wish him all the best in his future endeavours.
